Sh2-27 – Emission Nebula in the constellation Ophiuchus (Serpent-Bearer)
The star ζ Oph in the constellation Serpent-Bearer is a young, massive and very hot star, which excites the surrounding hydrogen gas to glow up to a distance of 50 light-years. The resulting nebula is very large with a diameter of about 10° in the sky, equivalent to 20 full moon diameters. However, it is very faint and can only be imaged with long exposure times.
