Planetary Nebula IC 5148 in the constellation Grus

IC 5148 is a beautiful planetary ring nebula in a relatively star-poor region in the constellation Grus (the Crane). The nebula has a diameter of about 2.4 light years and is expanding at over 50 kilometers per second. This makes it one of the fastest expanding planetary nebulae. The nebula, which appears in green-blue light, has 2 small reddish patches in the north-east and south-west. The inner part is not completely dark, but glows faintly in a diffuse light.
